Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater

Stretching nearly 20 kilometres across, the Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest unbroken volcanic caldera and one of Tanzania’s most breathtaking natural wonders. From the rim rising about 600 metres above the floor, sweeping views reveal a vast wildlife-filled landscape below, creating an unforgettable first impression of Africa’s beauty. The crater is a remarkable safari destination, packed with rich plains game and offering excellent chances to spot everything from grazing herds to elusive leopards resting in trees or moving quietly across the grasslands.

At the heart of the crater lies a shimmering soda lake where flocks of pink flamingos gather, while surrounding freshwater pools attract a wide variety of bird species throughout the year. Predators thrive here too, with lions often followed by hopeful hyenas and jackals patrolling the bushy edges in search of opportunity. With thoughtful planning and the right timing, visitors can enjoy both outstanding wildlife encounters and peaceful moments overlooking one of Africa’s most iconic landscapes.

When to visit

The dry season, from June to October, offers the best wildlife viewing as animals gather in large numbers. Between November and May, the landscapes remain stunning, but spotting game can be more challenging. Tanzania is a remarkable destination throughout the year, yet if witnessing the Great Migration is your goal, plan your visit between June and July. The dramatic river crossings occur from August to October, while the start of the year sees the birth of thousands of calves, with up to 8,000 arriving daily in February.
