Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park stands among the most legendary wildlife destinations on Earth, offering an extraordinary safari experience in the heart of Tanzania. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to the famous Big Five, with thrilling game drives led by experienced guides revealing wildlife roaming freely across vast open plains. Spanning nearly 14,750 square kilometres, the Serengeti’s name comes from the Maasai word meaning “endless plains,” a fitting description for its sweeping savannahs that stretch far beyond the horizon. The landscape is beautifully marked by umbrella acacia trees and towering baobabs, where giraffes stroll peacefully, lions rest in the shade, elephants move in herds, and cheetahs scan the plains from raised mounds.

One of the Serengeti’s greatest wonders is the Great Migration, where over a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras move across the ecosystem throughout the year. The calving season from January to March brings incredible scenes as thousands of newborns arrive daily, attracting predators and creating dramatic wildlife encounters. Carefully selected safari lodges, particularly in quieter regions such as the northern Serengeti, allow visitors to enjoy both luxury and front-row views of this natural spectacle while surrounded by untouched wilderness.

When to visit

The dry season, from June to October, offers the best wildlife viewing as animals gather in large numbers. Between November and May, the landscapes remain stunning, but spotting game can be more challenging. Tanzania is a remarkable destination throughout the year, yet if witnessing the Great Migration is your goal, plan your visit between June and July. The dramatic river crossings occur from August to October, while the start of the year sees the birth of thousands of calves, with up to 8,000 arriving daily in February.
