Ruaha National Park

Ruaha National Park

Ruaha National Park is Tanzania’s largest national park and one of its most rugged and wildlife-rich wilderness areas, offering an authentic safari experience far from the busy northern circuit. Located in the heart of the country, Ruaha is defined by dramatic landscapes of rolling hills, rocky escarpments, vast open plains, and the life-giving Great Ruaha River that flows through the park. This diverse terrain supports impressive wildlife populations, including large prides of lions, thriving elephant herds, leopards, cheetahs, buffaloes, giraffes, and a wide variety of antelope species.

The park is especially renowned for its predator action and exceptional birdlife, with over 570 bird species recorded, making it one of East Africa’s top birding destinations. With fewer visitors and vast open spaces, Ruaha delivers a raw and intimate safari atmosphere where wildlife encounters feel personal and untouched. From golden sunsets over baobab-studded plains to dramatic river crossings by elephants, every moment in Ruaha feels like a journey into Africa’s true wilderness.

When to visit

The dry season, from June to October, offers the best wildlife viewing as animals gather in large numbers. Between November and May, the landscapes remain stunning, but spotting game can be more challenging. Tanzania is a remarkable destination throughout the year, yet if witnessing the Great Migration is your goal, plan your visit between June and July. The dramatic river crossings occur from August to October, while the start of the year sees the birth of thousands of calves, with up to 8,000 arriving daily in February.
