Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park stands as one of Tanzania’s most celebrated wilderness areas, making it an ideal starting point or grand finale to any safari adventure. Renowned for its impressive elephant herds and striking baobab-dotted scenery, the park offers classic African landscapes where lions, leopards, and cheetahs frequently prowl across the open plains in pursuit of grazing wildlife.

The park takes its name from the Tarangire River, a vital lifeline that draws wildlife year-round and supports over 550 bird species, from vibrant yellow-collared lovebirds to the massive kori bustard. During the dry season, vast numbers of animals gather along the riverbanks, including hundreds of elephants and migrating wildebeest, creating exceptional game-viewing opportunities. Woodlands, acacia groves, and sun-baked savannahs blend together to form a picture-perfect safari setting.

Often referred to as the world’s baobab stronghold, Tarangire is home to countless ancient trees that dominate the landscape. Between October and December, these giants produce rare, dramatic white blossoms that bloom for a single night, releasing a scent that draws bats and insects — a truly magical natural spectacle.

When to visit

The dry season, from June to October, offers the best wildlife viewing as animals gather in large numbers. Between November and May, the landscapes remain stunning, but spotting game can be more challenging. Tanzania is a remarkable destination throughout the year, yet if witnessing the Great Migration is your goal, plan your visit between June and July. The dramatic river crossings occur from August to October, while the start of the year sees the birth of thousands of calves, with up to 8,000 arriving daily in February.
