When to Climb Kilimanjaro
Best Times for Climbing Kilimanjaro
Given Mount Kilimanjaro’s proximity to the equator, it doesn’t experience distinct winter and summer seasons but rather distinct dry and wet periods. Therefore, the optimal time for Kilimanjaro climbs usually coincides with the warmest and driest months (refer to Kilimanjaro weather). Safety is paramount, as adverse weather conditions significantly raise climbing risks. Rain, mud, snow, ice, and cold can exert considerable strain on climbers. Conversely, favorable weather conditions notably enhance summit success rates. Naturally, these periods also witness increased foot traffic on the mountain. The table below outlines the relative temperatures, precipitation levels, cloud cover, and crowd levels across the calendar months.
For optimal weather conditions with reduced rainfall and slightly warmer temperatures, consider climbing Kilimanjaro during January, February, and the first half of March. April and May typically experience heavier rains, while November and December have a shorter rainy season, which shouldn’t significantly disrupt the trek. June to August offers clear skies but colder temperatures, making it an excellent time for witnessing the wildebeest migration as well.
The Wet and Dry Seasons on Kilimanjaro
Climbing Kilimanjaro is feasible year-round, but it’s advisable to choose periods with lower chances of precipitation for a smoother ascent. The dry seasons extend from early December to early March and from late June to late October, presenting optimal weather conditions for climbing and consequently marking the busiest months (high season).
Our group climbs are strategically scheduled during these dry seasons.
- Short Dry Season: Running from mid-December to mid-March, these months are the warmest, featuring clear skies in the mornings and evenings. Daytime may see occasional clouds and brief showers.
- Long Rainy Season: Stretching from late March to early June, this period isn’t recommended for climbing unless you’re an experienced backpacker familiar with such conditions. Heavy rainfall and low visibility due to dense clouds are common, though the crowds are minimal.
- Long Dry Season: From mid-June to late October, the mountain tends to be colder but drier overall.
- Short Rainy Season: Occurring from early November to early December, this season brings afternoon rains with clear skies in the mornings and evenings.
Note that the rains are unpredictable and may come early or extend beyond their typical time frames. It is possible to experience mostly dry weather conditions during the rainy season, just as it is possible to have heavy rain during the dry season.
When not to climb Kilimanjaro
April and May are generally the least favorable months for climbing Kilimanjaro due to the extended rainy season. Heavy showers, particularly in the afternoons and evenings, can make trails slippery and difficult to traverse. At higher elevations, snowfall is common, and summit views are often hidden by clouds.
However, this period also offers a unique experience of the mountain in its most untouched state — quiet, snow-dusted, and free from crowds. For seasoned trekkers seeking solitude or photographers aiming to capture Kilimanjaro’s dramatic beauty, April and May can provide a rare and rewarding adventure. Climbers should be fully prepared for challenging conditions and ensure they have appropriate rain and cold-weather gear.
