Nyerere National Park
Nyerere National Park
Nyerere National Park, formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve, is one of Africa’s most untamed and expansive wilderness areas. Covering nearly 31,000 square kilometres, it holds the distinction of being Africa’s largest individual national park and ranks among the largest protected areas in the world.
Wildlife here thrives in remarkable numbers and variety, with dense animal populations spread across vast, untouched landscapes. Since the park was officially established in 2019 and remains less visited than many of Tanzania’s northern parks, animals are far less accustomed to human presence, creating an authentic and truly wild safari atmosphere. Game drives frequently reveal lions, leopards, and cheetahs alongside elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, wildebeest, zebras, and countless other species.
Flowing through the heart of the park, the powerful Rufiji River supports enormous elephant populations — nearly half of Tanzania’s total — along with graceful sable antelope, kudu, and a wide range of plains game. The river is also home to some of Africa’s largest concentrations of hippos and crocodiles. Rare African wild dogs are regularly spotted here, offering one of the most thrilling wildlife encounters in the region.
Nyerere National Park is perfect for travelers seeking a remote and adventurous safari experience, combining classic game drives with unforgettable boat safaris and cultural visits to nearby communities, all within one of Africa’s last great wildernesses.
